Number the Stars response by Ghostrider

Annemarie’s sister is Kirsti and her friend is Ellen. Peter helped the Jewish people. He was in the Resistance.

They didn’t have a good time on the ship. They had no dairy products or lollies.

The Jewish people are trying to run away from the Germans.

Peter was brave. He worked in the Resistance. Annemarie was brave when she talked to the soldiers.

The book was good and scary and sad and exiting.

Number the Stars response by China’s Army

Number the Stars

The German Army were people who wanted to take over countries of the world. In this story they invade Denmark. When they invade, they confiscated meat, leather, dairy and sugar.

Jewish people

The star of David tells the Germen Army if the people are Jewish. Synagogue is a church of Jewish people. They praise the lord.

Hardship

The German Army had taken meat so the people can’t make an Army. They can’t have newspapers so they did not know what was going on.

Characters

Annemarie was very brave in the story. she stoped at the solders and told them what they where doing. Ellen was Jewish and had to wear the Star of David to show that she was Jewish.

Jewish people

There where lots of Jewish people in the war. Lots of nazi solders would barge into houses and look for Jews and send them to a camp or shoot them on the spot and the fishermen would save some of them. They would hide them in a secret place.

Hard ship

In the war the Nazi soldiers would take things from you and harvest it as their own. They would take meat – imagine a world without meat. You wouldn’t have tea. You would have to use herbs and spices from your garden. You wouldn’t have any thing they wouldn’t let you.

Bravery
Lucky there was the Resistance. They would take the Jews and  give them to the fishermen

My opinion

I would give the book a 5 star rating. It’s a very good book – that’s my opinion

Annemarie is a character in this book and also a friend of a Jewish girl named Ellen. Annemarie was with Ellen when they got stopped by a German soldier and Kristy came running to them and it reminded one of the German soldiers of his little girl.

Jewish people sometimes wear a star of David and have a different New Year and have to light a candle on Fridays and their church is called a synagogue.

Danish people are not allowed to go out at night, no friends over at night, no cup cakes and dairy products and have blinds at night.

In Denmark, when  the war was on there was a resistance to help Jewish people escape. Jewish people wear a star of David so the Germans can grab them and put them in a concentration camp and either shoot them, gas them, starve them, dehydrate them. Annemarie got stopped by a soldier and acted like a silly little girl and started to cry.

My opinion is it was breath taking because you thought everyone was going to get killed and also it gives you some time to think about all the men and women that fought for us to be free.

THE END

Number the Stars by Lois Lowry: Details about the book and teaching notes

Personally I do not think that this book would be suitable for students under Grade 4. My students were blown away with the concepts in this book. It was great that the final reading of the story took place on Remembrance Day – Novemebr 11th. I found an amazing website for teaching ideas to complement this book. The url is:

http://www.cdli.ca/CITE/number_the_stars.htm#Writing

Erika’s story was an excellent short story, picture book that we read to complement our reading of Number the Stars. Students have been motivated enough to search for other children’s books about the war and the Holocaust. One of my reluctant readers ran back from the library with a book about Anne Frank and told me she was going to read it for homework. What a shame the end of the school year approaches. Next time, I teach literature studies with this novel, I shall include report writing and biographies and definitely include some project work on Anne Frank.  Today we read Margaret Wild’s “Let the celebrations begin”.  It was nice to have a “happy ending”.

Please contact me via this blog’s comments section if you have some great lesson ideas for teaching about the holocaust or WWII

Annemarie is the main character in the story. She likes to play with paper dolls and is she is very smart and understands what’s going on and why. Ellen is Annemarie’s best friend and they do everything together but when she gets sent away, its so she can be free. Kirsti is Annemarie’s little sister. She loves playing with paper dolls and is very fussy and is called a silly little girl.

Most of the Jewish people wore the star of David to show that they were Jewish. On every Friday all the Jewish people would light candles and have a different New Year than the other people.

When the war was on, the people couldn’t have lots of things like cup cakes, leather, toys, dolls and newspapers. The worst thing of all was that their electricity was limited and the Germans ate all their meat. They couldn’t have sleep overs or have other people over and they couldn’t even go out after 8 o’clock.

Resistance is a very important group of people that make plans to blow up the Germans tank and all the other stuff they had. But they had to be very brave. In this story Annemarie had to be brave and keep on being brave too.

I loved this story so I think that other people would too. This story will remind everyone of the war and all the people that went to it to fight. But this story is sad but it does get happier.

Number the stars.

Characters.
There was a girl named Annemarie. She had a friend who was Jewish. Her name was Ellen. One day Annemarie and Ellen were running down the street. Annemarie and Ellen left Kirsty behind. They raced along the street. Then they heard a “HALT”. Annemarie and Ellen stopped. The soldiers told them to.

Jewish People.
Some people wore a star of David necklace. The Germans made all the Jewish people wear a big yellow star on their clothes during the war. New Year for the Jewish people is in October. They light candles on Friday nights.

Bravery.
Annemarie was brave. She had to tell fibs to the Germans so that the Germans didn’t find out they were gathering Jewish people at their house.

Hardship.
The Danish people weren’t allowed to have sugar to make biscuits and treats. There wasn’t any leather to make shoes, so Kirsty had to wear fish skin shoes. She was not happy about this.

My opinion.

I thought it was really sad and it was not fair that the Germans took all their meat and dairy. I think this is a good book to learn about the world wars.

This book talks about the hard ship that people face in the war. They couldn’t have much because the German people confiscated their stuff. They couldn’t have tea or sugar. They couldn’t have the newspaper because the German soldiers didn’t want them to know what was going on.

Characters
My favourite character was Annemarie. She was very brave running through the woods. When the German soldiers stopped her, she pretended to be a stupid little girl. She was very brave.

Resistance
The Resistance is a secret army. The resistance is an army that tries to fight against any army that tries to take over their country.

The Jewish people light candles every Friday night. The star of David is to let people know that they are Jews. New Year is in October.

My opinion about that story is it is a very good book and even though I wasn’t there for the whole book, I recommend the book.

Annemarie was 12 years old. She liked to paint pictures. Ellen is 11years old. She is Annemarie’s best friend. Mrs Johanson looked after the girls since Denmark got invaded by the German soldiers. Uncle Henrik spoke to Mrs Johanson in code like a carton of cigarettes is one Jewish person and more cigarettes is more Jewish people.

If the Jewish people got caught by the German soldiers, they would got put in a camp and get gassed. The star of David means the person that’s wearing the chain is a Jewish person. The baby had to get drugged while running away from the German soldiers. The Jewish people went under the boat. The German solders had a highly professional dogs that got trained to sniff out Jewish people. The people had a handkerchief to block the smell to not smell the Jewish people.

In Denmark people can’t eat meat or dairy because the German soldiers took them away to feed the whole entire army instead. They can’t have any cups of tea or coffee. In their cups of tea and coffee is hot water with really horrible garlic herbs. They can only have a certain amount of electricity.

My opinion on this story is that I would rate this story 5/5 stars. If I was Ellen, I would be scared to get stopped by 2 German soldiers and a sniffer dog that had been highly professionally trained.

Characters

The characters of Number the Stars are Annemarie, Ellen, Kirsti, Peter and the Germans. Annemarie is the main character in the story and she is brave, smart and helper of the Jews’ escape. Ellen is also one of the main characters in the book and she is one of the Jews and brave and had to pretend to be Annemarie’s sister. Kirsti is Annemarie’s younger sister and she is dumb and crazy but sometimes smart. Peter is playing a good role in the book being one of the Resistance fighters and putting his life on the line to help the Danish people. The Germans are the evil guys around and they started WW2 but they were stopped by the Aussies, English and the American blokes.

Jewish People

The Jewish people are the main characters in the book but things they do some things differently to Annemarie’s family. They go to the synagogue, wear the star of David, have new year early and light candles on Fridays. The star of David is the symbol of the jews. A synagogue is the place that the jews go to worship their god. The custom of the Jews is to have a new year in October and go their special church to light candles on every Friday.

Hardships

The people of Denmark and some other countries did not have many things. They couldn’t have butter, electricity, meat and tea. Why they don’t have butter is because the Germans ate all the cows. Why they also don’t have power much because the Germans needed the power to power their factories. Why the people do not have any meat is because the Germans ate all the cows and sheep. The reason why they have no tea is because the transport ships couldn’t get through.

Bravery

One of the bravest people in the book is Annemarie because she doesn’t know much about the war. Even though she knows about some things, she still acts brave in front of the soldiers. The Resistance fighters are brave because they risk their lives to fight the Germans.

My opinion

I think this book is cool because it has a lot about war. I would recommend this book for people who want to find out more about the war.
